A little over a year ago when the Lake County Atoms and Rink Side Sports
entered into an agreement to form a ‘Partnership in Hockey’ there were
many questions and concerns about whether the idea could succeed.
Today, it would be hard to describe the first year as anything less
than successful for both parties.
“The things that stand out in my mind were the
successes of the ‘Fright on Ice’ tournament and the Atoms/Rink Side community
charity game which benefits the Marshall Khayat
Memorial Fund, but most of all being able to offer hockey to all
players no matter what they want”, said Rink Side General Manager Mike
Hernbrott. “Moving forward,
I know I expect the partnership to strengthen both programs”.
“We’ve got quality ice times at a fair price and
a solid relationship with the entire Rink Side staff”, said Atoms
President Keith Rutkowski. “My
goals have always been to provide an affordable opportunity for local
families to play travel hockey and keep the Atoms program moving
forward”. “I believe the
partnership has allowed us to do both”.
In an era when many organizations and rinks are
struggling to deal with each others issues and problems, the Atoms/Rink
Side ‘Partnership in Hockey’ is a rare deal indeed.
Both parties are looking forward to the future and to have the
opportunity to build on this strong foundation.

The Atoms and Rink Side Sports
“Partnership in Hockey” which began March 1, 2003 created a new home rink for the Atoms
at Rink Side Sports.
The Atoms run the premier Travel Hockey Program in Northern
Lake County,
while Rink Side Sports operates, administers and promotes
Learn to Skate and Play Hockey classes, Instructional Hockey clinics
and the Recreational Youth Hockey League.
This partnership allows each organization to focus on
their strengths, providing a better experience for the player.
